About Us

HOME

THE CLUB: The Anthropology Student Union was created to bring Anthropology majors together to learn, share and just plain have fun.

We hold meetings every other Tuesday at 7pm in HSSB 2001A with free pizza and soda.  Each meeting we host a guest speaker to talk about different topics in Anthropology and how undergraduates can get involved in various opportunities.

President:
  Shea Antrim
Shea Antrim is a third-year Cultural Anthropology and Psychology major. She is a member of the Honors program in the College of Letters and Sciences and Lambda Alpha, the Anthropology Honors Society. Shea hopes to attend graduate school in Anthropology or a related field after graduating in the spring of 2006. On a more personal note, Shea enjoys country music, mint chocolate chip ice cream and yes, long walks on the beach.

Web Master:
  Anthony Keith Alvarez
Anthony Alvarez is the overlord of all that you see here. As far as
this website goes, his powers are nearly endless...

Tony has two loves, fieldwork & photography.  His favorite hobby, outside of anthropology & archaeology of course, is photography. He has had photos published in field reports & Directions magazine. Tony is an active student at UCSB & is also a part of a number of research projects including a field survey for the archeological conservancy, a senior honors thesis with Dr. Michael Glassow, & an ongoing project as part of the Tataviam Archaeological Research Project (TARP) with Dr. Noble Eisenlauer at LA Pierce College.  Tony hopes to make good use of his photography & field experiences in his future career as a community college or university professor.  He is in the process of applying to graduate schools & anxiously awaits the steady torrent of offers & acceptance letters.  Feel free to take a look at his portfolio at www.AnthroTony.com

Publicist:  Becky Johnson
Becky is a fourth year cultural anthropology major. She chose not to double
major so that she could pursue her own more varied interests in issues of
public health and public policy formation. After she graduates, she will be
taking a couple years off to head out into the unknown so that she may pay off college before incurring more debt when she heads to graduate school. Her life long dream is to change the world and do some research. In the meantime, she will continue to paint, read, enjoy nature, and travel.

Historian:  Cheryl Bommarito Klein
Cheryl is a graduating senior double-majoring in Anthropology and Philosophy.  She is spending this year coordinating the California Undergraduate Anthropology Conference and working on her senior honors thesis detailing the medicinal practices of the Tataviam.  She has recently applied for graduate work in Anthropology focusing on ethnomedicine (and asks anyone who is able, to please keep their fingers crossed for a flood of acceptances).  In the future, she looks forward to marketing her own line of archaeology clothing with the coveted slogan "I dig old guys".  For more information on Cheryl's activities, please visit her website: www.uweb.ucsb.edu/~cheryl_bk

Treasurer:  Sarah Gates
A student in the Honors program, Sarah is working toward her BA in Physical Anthropology.  She has been on archaeological digs at Mitchell Springs in Cortez, Colorado, and a Mound excavation through the University of Alabama. She has also traveled extensively visiting many archaeological sites.  She is currently working on a research project with Dr. Michael Jochim on the analysis of prehistoric tools from a site in southern Germany.  In Winter quarter '05 she is beginning what promises to be a very interesting study with Dr. Philip Walker on the categorization and digital mapping of skulls.  This study hopes to answer questions about the evolution and development of Native Americans.  She enjoys getting her hands dirty by active participation in laboratories, archaeological digs, and classes.

Advisor:  Dr. Michael Jochim
Dr. Jochim is a professor of Archaeology at UCSB and one of the nicest folks you can have the pleasure of meeting!  To really get the low down on him, visit his website or visit his office at HSSB 1036 and say hello.
