The 2005-2006 Chican@ Graduate Student Colectiva

I'm a Chicano originally from Orange County (oh the sweet irony) but I was born in Ventura so UCSB is a symbolic return to my central coast roots.
I enjoy exploring all the restaurants on state street and listening to obscure British post-punk music from the 80's.
I am a member of the Social and Outreach Committees.
I enjoy living in Santa Barbara and spending any free time at the beach or in the downtown area, but I often return home to Upland, CA to spend time with my parents, three brothers and two sisters.
I’m a 1st year Ph.D. student in Anthropology studying prehistoric settlement patterns of the Salinan Tribe in Central California. Archaeological research focuses on the intersection of subsistence and settlement patterns as they relate to gender, sociopolitical, and economic organization. The greatest reward has been working with Salinan descendants.
I am committed to improving bilingual children’s learning, protecting immigrant’s human rights, and ensuring Native American rights to traditional use areas. I work for the U.S. Forest Service, volunteer at SB Charter School, and am dedicated to university retention of single parents and minority students.
I am the representative for the Conference Committee, we are working towards developing an interdisciplinary conference for Chican@/Latin@ graduate students for fall 2006. In addition to academics, I am a member of Raices de Mi Tierra--a folklorico group on campus. I love to spend time with mi familia y amig@s.
I am the webmaster for the Chicana/o Graduate Student Colectiva, and as such I am in charge of the design, maintenance and upkeep of this website. I also perform some website maintenance duties for IDGEC and the Bren School's GSD Program.
I can sometimes be found in the Computer Science Graduate Student Laboratory (GSL), at the UCSB track doing wind sprints, or in the Recreation Center where I'm either lifting weights, running on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or playing soccer for FC Colectiva. In fact, the first place you should really look for me is the Recreation Center...!
I am also the Graduate Student Representative for Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women and the Funding Committee Representative for the Chican@ Graduate Student Colectiva.
I enjoy travelling and food.
I also work on multiple research projects on Women's Health and Latino Mother-daughter communication. If you are a spanish speaking undergraduate interested in being a research assistant while getting units e-mail me.
I stand for social justice and believe knowledge is the ultimate means of empowerment. I am a firm believer that one person can make a difference and encourage others to join me to “think global and act local.”
I enjoy traveling with my husband, spending time with our dogs, reading, going to concerts, drinking fair-trade coffee and watching UFC matches on pay-per-view.
I'm also apart of Accion Zapatista de Santa Barbara, a collective working in solidarity with the Zapatistas in Southern Mexico as well as locally resisting the imposition of neo-liberalism through a political pratice of Zapatismo. Our collective is networked(ing) regionally, nationally and internationally. I am also a part of Caracol Intergalactika, a transnational collective of activists inspired by the EZLN and the growing global movement of movements struggling to build another world.
I am a queer Xicana, born and raised in the community of Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles. Outside of the University I am a co-founding member and part of the current working board of Tongues, a Los Angeles-based not for profit organization of queer women of color collaborating for social change. Since 1999, we have organized cultural/artistic community events, performances, workshops, and art exhibits in addition to editing an annual print publication with the intention of giving voice and visibility to queer women of color by providing spaces for creative, cultural, and political expression. Most recently, we have begun to build transnational solidarity networks with lesbian feminist organizations in Mexico.
