Chicana/o Graduate Student Colectiva Constitution

Article I: Name

According to UCSB policy, “a registered campus organization shall not use the name of the University of California or abbreviations thereof as a part of its name except in accordance with the campus regulations” (generally, this means getting special approval from the Chancellor). However, “UCSB” can be used as a geographical designation (e.g.: Chess Club at UCSB).

Article II: Purpose

A. The organization’s purpose is:

The Chicana/o Graduate Student Colectiva seeks to build community among Chicana/o and Latina/o Graduate Students, create mentor/mentee relationships, and assist in recruitment and retention efforts, across all disciplines.

Article III: Membership Requirements

All voting members of a registered campus organization must be UCSB students, staff, or faculty members. All others may be considered Non-voting/Associate members. Please list any additional membership requirements for your group.
A. Voting members of this organization must meet the following requirements:

Must be enrolled as a graduate student.
Must be involved and responsive to Colectiva events and discussions.

Article IV: Officers/Elections

All officers of a registered campus organization must be UCSB students, staff, or faculty members. Please list any additional requirements for your
group’s officers.

A. The titles and duties of the officers of this organization shall be:
Title – Duties
Representative - Duties include facilitating and recording meetings, attending to financial needs and OSL account, attending to e-mail responsibilities, represent the organization.

B. The term of office shall be:
One full calendar year (September to September).

C. The requirements for persons running for and holding office shall be:
Must be enrolled at least part time as a graduate student.
Must attend ¾ of all meetings.

D. The nomination and election of officers is held:
Second Week of Fall Quarter.

E. The nomination of officers is conducted as follows:
Peer/Self Nominations.

F. The election of officers is conducted as follows:
Aggregate of silent votes of all active members.

G. Officers may be removed from office by the following procedures:
Collective consensus among group with a ¾ majority vote of active members.

H. Vacancies occurring in any elective office between regular election times are filled as follows:

An Election will be held to fill the post, until the election, the remaining representatives will fulfill the duties of the post vacated. Collective consensus among group with a ¾ majority vote of active members will be required.

Article V: Meetings

A. Meetings of this organization are conducted according to the following requirements:

Meetings will be held every two weeks in the Dolores Huerta Conference (or as otherwise announced).

Article VIII: Financial Matters

Registered campus organizations must follow the UCSB Campus

Regulations Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students in all financial matters and accept full responsibility for all activities which bear the organization’s name as official sponsor. All funds raised using University facilities must be deposited in an Office of Student Life trustee account and may be withdrawn in accordance with the organization’s purpose. Only the individuals whose names are on file with the Office of Student Life can authorize expenditures for the organization. Please list any additional requirements for your organization’s financial matters.

A. The following requirements shall be followed in all financial matters of the organization:

CGSC representatives have the authority over all general funds. In addition all representatives are responsible for planning and posting a yearly plan designed to meet the needs of the community it represents. A request for funds may be placed at any general meeting. Requests will be voted on by the active members with approval consisting of a ¾ majority vote (based on available funds). Sponsored events shall be published campus wide.

B. Membership dues are $5.00 per quarter.

Article IX: Constitutional Amendments

Amendments to a constitution normally require a two-thirds vote of the general membership. Any amendment, deletion or addition must be filed with the Office of Student Life within one week of adoption. Please list any other requirements for constitutional amendments.

A. This constitution may be amended as follows:

Collective consensus among group with a ¾ majority vote of active members. CGSC representatives are responsible for filing amendments with the Office of Student Life within one week of adoption.
