Raza College Day

As an organization, we understand that the majority of students enrolled at UCSB are from the areas outside the tri-county. We saw the need to offer these students a program that would introduce them to higher education and allow them to begin thinking, planning, and executing the necessary steps to attend college. Raza College Day offers this opportunity in an environment that is not only educational, but also personal and empowering as well. The one-day conference is personalized to make the university a reality for the student. With the passage of the California Civil Rights Initiative or Proposition 209, which has drastically affected the number of minority students attending Universities in California, we feel that Raza College Day's value and significance have become even more evident for the estimated eight hundred students who will attend that day. One has to realize that for many of these students, this may be the only opportunity they will have to experience and take part in an event such as this.

On Saturday April 18th, 2009, El Congreso will host its Seventeen annual Raza College Day. Due to the importance of its accessibility we will transport all interested students from the tri county area to UCSB. The all day event will begin at 7:00 AM and proceed until 5:00 PM. The agenda is composed of workshops that will emphasize the importance of preparing for the university, admissions, financial aid, academics, community participation/activism, and other issues that are of concern to students. A number of speakers representing diverse expertise will be on hand to present the educational workshops for students. Due to the length of this event, lunch and culturally relevant entertainment will be provided.
