Greenhouse and
Garden Project (GHGP)
Rules and
Regulations
The Greenhouse and Garden Project is an organic garden and alternative agriculture center for the University of California at Santa Barbara. The purpose of the organization is to provide organic gardening and greenhouse space for agricultural research, teaching, exploration and recreation opportunities for students, staff and faculty of the university.
The intent of this document is to establish rules and regulations that protect, enhance, and prolong the life of the garden, while alleviating time constraints on the garden officers.
THE GARDEN OFFICERS
WILL INITAITE AND AUTHORIZE ALL CLUB MATTERS AND SHALL CONTROL ALL ACTIVITIES
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RULES AND REGULATIONS SPECIFIED BELOW. Please read,
date, and sign prior to returning to the garden officers.
MEMBER’S RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1. Dues must be paid annually,
currently based on the quarter system. Starting fall of 2000, all dues are due at the time the gardener
becomes a member and at the beginning of each sequential fall quarter that they
are a member. You have until October
31st to contact the treasurer and pay dues.
Dues are currently $20 per year.
Dues are considered late if not received by the treasurer by this time
and you will be charged $5/month for every month they have not been paid. The
GHGP officers reserve the right to increase dues with majority vote of the
officers at any time. We also require a
one-time deposit of $10. You will
receive your deposit back when you leave the garden if the garden coordinators
approve that your plot is cleaned of any non-biodegradable products and/or
piles of weeds.
2. All members must report a change of
phone number or email immediately to the garden director. A member's plot may be reassigned if it is
not in use and up to date contact information has not been provided. If you decide to stop gardening and would
like a friend to take over, both of you must contact the coordinator and your
friend must become a member (having a garden tour & signing the rules and
regulations.) The person taking over
the plot must be eligible as a current student, staff, or faculty member at
U.C. Santa Barbara.
3. Members assume full responsibility
and liability for any and all actions of your guests at the garden. Guests are expected to observe the same
rules and regulations to which garden members have agreed to observe. It is the member’s responsibility to inform
their guests of the rules and regulations.
4. All members are required to work two
workday (potluck) hours per quarter.
This may be achieved by either attending a potluck or contacting a
coordinator for assignment of independent work. If hours are not worked, you will pay $10 per hour missed due at
the end of each quarter.
5. Voting Members (students, staff and
faculty of UCSB) must attend the quarterly meetings if they wish to vote. These meetings are held every quarter, on
the second Sunday of the quarter at the Greenhouse at 11am unless otherwise
posted on the tool-shed bulletin board.
6. The Garden is 100% organic. If you buy a product that does not
explicitly say ORGANIC you must ask the garden coordinator if you can use
it. Using non-organic fertilizers,
pesticides or herbicides (e.g. Round-Up, Miracle Grow) is strictly prohibited.
7. Plots must be visibly used to keep
them reserved for you. If a plot is
not visibly used within four weeks it may be assigned to another person. Please be sure to notify the coordinator if
you are on vacation or if you would like to reserve your plot for when you
return. Visible usage includes obvious
sings of weeding or turning of soil (not just watering). The coordinator will contact you regarding
your lack of use and you will have 2 weeks from that time to visibly use
it. If you do not, your membership will
be revoked and your plot will become available for a new member.
8. Permanent structures or structures
which are not easily removed are NOT
allowed. The garden officers MUST authorize any permanent structure built
on the property. Structures built for
anything other than the growing of plants are not allowed. Only make trellises that you will remove by
the end of two growing seasons. Please
do not bring metal fencing, wood with old nails, or any other non-natural
source of trellising into the garden.
You must receive consent from a garden officer before using nails to
build anything. If you would like to
use Arrundu Grass (bamboo-like plant in the northern part of the garden) it
must be completely dried before use.
You will need to remove your trellis if it starts growing.
9. Trash or items that do not naturally
break down are not allowed into the garden. This includes small plastic pots and bottles, containers, and
bags. They can be used for seedling
protection for up to two months but they must be removed and stored
elsewhere. Plastics break down in a short
period of time and end up in our soil.
You are responsible for the removal of your trash. If there is a garbage problem on your plot,
the garden coordinator will contact you about it. You will then have two weeks to remove these items, or your membership
will be revoked.
10. Weeds
are to be removed from GHGP grounds or composted on your plot. Do not create weed piles in the garden. After weeding, take all weeds out of the
garden and bring them to the adjacent dump.
Please dump them as far from the garden and as close to the dumpsters
as possible (otherwise they quickly spread seeds back into the garden.)
11. Growing illegal plants (e.g.
marijuana) in the garden is strictly prohibited.
12. Sale of produce grown in the garden
for individual profit is strictly prohibited. Produce may only be sold by the group for collective funds.
13. You may expand your plot ONLY after
consenting with the coordinator. If
you are unsure of your boundaries contact the coordinator.
14. The destruction, theft, conversion,
and/or vandalism of a fellow garden member's property or property of the GHGP
will not be tolerated and is grounds for immediate dismissal.
15. All plants at the garden are property
of the GHGP after a member leaves the garden.
This includes any plants planted and/or propagated by members of the
GHGP and includes potted plants. Once
you leave the garden, you will have specific notice as to how long you have to
remove your plants. This rule does not
apply to the Habitat Restoration club or any UCSB researchers.
16. No rototilling is allowed in the
garden, unless you receive consent from an officer. Our water lines are fragile and easily damaged.
17.
Each garden member is required to
adopt at least one fruit tree or an area of the orchard if all fruit trees are adopted. You are in charge of watering the tree once
every week or two during the dry season (more often for small trees) and
keeping the weeds at the base of the tree to a minimum. You can create a basin around the base of
the tree and add manure or mulch if desired.
Do not plant, remove, or prune the fruit trees without a garden
coordinator's permission. Do not dig
directly underneath them; instead use hands or a hand tool to pull weeds. Notify the coordinator of any pest problems
in the trees. The best way to water
your tree is with a low flow of water for ˝ to 1 hour. Please keep water off the trunk of the tree
to reduce rot.
18. Each
garden member may take a few pieces of fruit from each tree when ripe. You must be reasonable in quantity and stripping
(taking a bag-full) will not be tolerated.
Some varieties are very limited in the garden and some are
abundant. There are 40 - 80 members at
any time so please use your judgement and be conscientious to everyone else.
19. Do not remove tools from the garden. Replace them in the tool shed when finished
using them and do not share the tool-shed combination with anyone that is not a
member.
20. Dogs must be leashed while on GHGP
grounds. Members assume full liability
of their dogs at the GHGP.
21. The garden is closed from sunset to sunrise. Campus police patrol regularly and many transients visit the area. The only gardeners allowed at the garden after dark are Habitat Restoration employees working inside the greenhouse. This rule is for your safety.
22. Shoes must be worn in the garden at
all times, open toed shoes are not allowed while digging in the garden. Gardeners assume all liability for wearing
no shoes or open toed shoes at the garden.
23. No smoking on GHGP grounds.
24. A parent or guardian must closely
supervise children under 12.
Please refer
to the bylaws on file with the Office of Student Life.
I
HAVE READ AND AGREE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE GREENHOUSE AND
GARDEN PROJECT. I UNDERSTAND THAT
VIOLATIONS OF ANY RULES OR REGULATIONS IS GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL. VIOLATION AND PENALTIES WILL BE DEALT WITH
ACCORDING TO THE DUE PROCESS SECTION OF GHGP BYLAWS, ON FILE WITH THE OFFICE OF
STUDENT LIFE. ANY QUESTIONS I MIGHT
HAVE I HAVE HAD CLARIFIED BY A GARDEN OFFICER PRIOR TO SIGNING THIS DOCUMENT.

GUIDELINES
The GHGP guidelines are operating and gardening guidelines. They are not intended as strict rules. They are meant to be helpful and informative.
1. If you break a water line, you must
shut off the water ASAP and contact a coordinator immediately. PVC water lines run from 4 - 8 inches below
the surface and are easily ruptured by shovels. Consult the garden coordinator about where water lines are buried. The main valve is located between the
pomegranates, just northwest of the greenhouse.
2. Please do not plant invasive species. This includes ivy, fennel, arrundu grass, pampas grass, ice plant and morning glory (if broadcast seeded). Some herbs that easily get out of control and should not be planted in abundance are spearmint, peppermint and oregano. Rosemary also grows in abundance and there are plenty of these herbs to be shared between garden members and in communal areas. Do not plant brambles (raspberries, blackberries, etc.)
3. Maintenance of the orchard/greenhouse
is is everyone's responsibility.
4. Hoses should be kept off paths and
coiled near spigots.
5. Please do not fill or tamper with the
fish ponds without permission from a GHGP officer. Notify an officer immediately of any problems with the ponds.
6. Cat food and veterinary care is on a
donation basis.
7. In the event of a disagreement between
gardeners, those involved should try to separate the problem from the
personalities and work toward a solution, keeping the overall interests of the
garden in mind. If disagreement
continues, members should refer to “garden disputes” section of GHGP bylaws.
8. Manure should be retrieved from the
area closest to the road first. This way it is easier for the Horse Boarders
truck to dump more.
9. If you see someone picking fruit that
you do not recognize you may want to ask them if they are a member. Visitors are not allowed to take anything
from the garden (visitor rules posted at entrance to garden), although one or
two pieces from abundantly producing trees is not a big deal. There have been recent incidents of trees
being stripped so keep an eye out and inform the garden coordinator immediately
if you see anything suspicious.
10.
Bermuda grass should be aggressively
removed and NEVER composted. Keep tall
weeds out of paths, especially between the mowed paths and your plot.
11. Please notify the garden coordinator or an advisor if you notice broken tools or wheel barrels in need of replacement or repair. Tools have disappeared so please be wary of unfamiliar people opening the tool shed. Contact the coordinator if you see anything suspicious.
12. If you have a bug problem consult Rodale’s Garden Problem Solver Book
or
The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening (both
in the tool shed) or Island Seed in Feed in Goleta.
13. If you have a gopher problem, the best
thing to do is trap them with a gopher trap.
The most effect trap used in our garden is the “black hole”, available
at any local gardening store. You have
to supply your own traps.
This document can be amended by officer
majority during spring quarter.
