The West Campus Community, which includes UCSB Faculty Housing, the Devereux Center, Coal Oil Point Reserve, the University Children's Center and our very own Horse Boarders Association, is a diverse community enjoyed by both the residents and many visitors. The Horse Boarders Association would like to share some information about this community that the general public might not be aware of and tell about our contributions to the community.

The Threatened Western Snowy Plover
A flock of Western Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) inhabits the beaches near West Campus, and even though there has been an ongoing education effort, many people are still not aware of the Snowy Plovers in this area.

Snowy Plovers are small birds that can be found on the dry sands of the beach, where they blend in with the debris and natural contours of the sand. These birds have been classified as threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and we should all do our best not to disturb their habitat or behavior. There are signs by the Coal Oil Point entrances to the beach which show a map of their territory, and the best ways to avoid disturbing them. We should all be able to enjoy the beaches, including the native inhabitants. If you're interested in learning more about the Snowy Plover, here are some sites and organizations that can help.

Outreach Program Horsemanship Classes

West Campus Stables Horse Boarders Association offers an Outreach Program for school-age children. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet with a gentle horse and make a new friend. Children also get to know the special wetland surroundings and learn how our stable peacefully and respectfully coexists in its beautiful wetland environment. We offer a variety of classes or tours, depending on the needs of the school group or club. All classes come at no cost to the group and are a part of our commitment to community service. There are no classes offered at this time.
