Rethinking
Identity: Perspectives on
Identity in Hispanic and Lusophone Cultures
The concept of identity is constituted at
various levels, from that of the individual to that of an entire
culture or religion, and integrates different personal and social
issues, such as sexuality, nationality and language. Many variables
affect identity in its different aspects, causing identity to become a
focus in literature, as well as other fields of study. In his/her
pursuance of identity, the individual aims to affirm himself/herself in
a transitioning and inapprehensible world, at times rebelling, and by
doing so defining for himself a fragmented existence. How is identity
defined, be it at the individual level, at the national or cultural
level, or at a sexual level? Why do we question and redefine identity?
How does identity in language, literature and culture break down
boundaries, in the various aspects of human existence, by producing the
rebellion which allows and indeed defines the being in the world?
