Dear Sir or Madame;

As the 2006-2007 UCSB Mini Baja Team, we would like to introduce ourselves to businesses in the community and in our home towns and share a little about our plans and goals for the upcoming months. As seniors in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UCSB, we are required to complete an intensive, year-long design project known as the Capstone Design Project. Being as mechanically driven and as competitive as we are, we selected the Mini Baja because of its automotive focus and because of the final competition held at the end of the year. The competition consists of a number of smaller more technical challenges and a final endurance race. Mini Baja is sponsored by SAE (The Society of Automotive Engineers) and is highly recognized and respected within industry. Here is an abridged description from the website (http://students.sae.org/competitions/minibaja/ midwest):

“Mini Baja is oriented at giving students simulated real-world engineering design projects, including the related challenges. The main challenge is to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain throughout the different competitions. To ensure an emphasis on quality design, all vehicles are powered by a ten-horsepower Intek Model 20 engine donated by Briggs & Stratton Corporation. A few other equally important tasks include the planning, manufacturing, and budgeting.”

A complete list of rules and regulations can be found at http://www.sae.org/students/mbrules.pdf.

As a team, we plan on improving last year’s car which was built from scratch with only about $8000, a fraction of the upwards of $20000 some teams spent. Based on the information and suggestions we have received from last year’s team, we have a good idea of what improvements can be made to enhance the cars performance. Our goal is to place higher than last year’s team (33rd out of the 85 that qualified for competition) and to create a committed and winning foundation for future Mini Baja teams to follow. In order to achieve these goals, we need your help. As mentioned before, one of the additional challenges that the UCSB team faces limited funds from the University. Based on last year’s and other schools’ budgets, our goal is to raise $15000.

We hope that you too will become interested in what we are trying to achieve. If you feel that you would be able to sponsor our team in any way (financially, materially, or physically), please let us know. At this time we are simply looking for expressed interest and/or pledges from you or your company. If you are able to offer your support, your company name will be displayed on our car, our design proposal, and our team poster. Since this is a highly publicized event, your company logo will be seen by thousands of eager customers, potential employees, and fellow business people across the West Coast.

We appreciate your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or especially, support. If you would like to contribute to our team, please make checks payable to “UCSB Mini Baja” and mail to 6690 Abrego Rd. #313, Isla Vista, CA 93117 .

Thank you,

UCSB Mini Baja Team
