Our MissionThe purpose of this project is to work cooperatively with another team in order to improve last year’s Baja car. As a background, last year’s team placed 33rd out of 85 schools that attended the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Baja competition, and was the first UCSB team to ever finish the four hour endurance race. Working off of this success, we intend to improve upon this performance to firmly establish UCSB as a competitive school and raise on-campus awareness of the Baja project. Unlike last year, there are now two Baja teams that must both meet their respective goals in order to be successful. With respect to the class, we are defining success as meeting our desired top speed and suspension travel characteristics, and with respect to the competition we would like to compete in all of the events, have the car survive without any mechanical failure, and place well among the other schools. In addition, the overall frame will be shortened in to improve the turning radius and maneuverability. This will give the car increased agility as well as the ability to navigate through rough terrain and pass opponents during open stretches of the race.
