ALUMNI/NA:
A fraternity (ALUMNI) sorority (ALUMNA) member who has graduated. CPC
(Collegiate Panhellenic Council): The Council which includes all of the
ten national sororities.
BID:
An official invitation to a PNM to become a new member of that sorority
Disaffiliation: The process which Recruitment Counselors and other
Panhellenic Executive officers undergo in order to be fair, objective, and
unbiased. Any woman who is “disaffiliated” from her particular chapter is not
allowed to share her affiliation through words, dress, etc. This process is
valued by the CPC at UCSB
PANHELLENIC:
Usually used to mean the Executive Board of Collegiate Panhellenic Council
which is comprised of 10 active sorority members; one from each of the 10
Panhellenic chapters
HAZING:
Any type of action or activity that does not contribute to the positive
development of a person. Hazing is against the law and is not tolerated at
UCSB.
INITIATION:
The traditional ritual which brings a new member into full membership in the
fraternity or sorority.
IFC:
(Inter-Fraternity Council) The governing body of the North American
Inter-fraternity Conference member fraternities.
LEGACY:
A PNM who has a close relative (usually a parent, grandparent, or sibling) who
is a member of a fraternity or a sorority.
PNM:
(Potential New Member) Any woman attending UCSB starting Fall 2005 who is not
currently enrolled in any Greek letter organization. Rush: A slang term for
Formal Fall Recruitment
NPC:
(National Panhellenic Council) Our national organization which supports and
guides our workshops, recruitment process, and any other Panhellenic functions
Recruitment Counselor: A active sorority member at UCSB who disaffiliates from
her particular chapter for the week of recruitment in order to offer unbiased
and helpful information about all 10 of our Panhellenic houses. Each
recruitment counselor must complete extensive training in order to support the
potential new members. . Recruitment counselors will wear a uniform and
recognizable shirt so that they will be easily accessible and identifiable to
you as a resource.
SISTER/BROTHER:
A term used by members of a sorority or fraternity when referring to one
another.
