Nonoxynol-9Historically, nonoxynol-9 has been shown to kill HIV and other sexually transmitted viruses and bacteria in the laboratory. It was widely believed that condoms pre-lubricated with nonoxylnol-9 might be more effective than just a condom alone in preventing STIs/HIV and pregnancy. Recent studies have pointed to possible problems in this theory. Although nonoxynol-9 has been shown to kill some bacteria and viruses, it also breaks down some of the defenses in normal skin that protect against STIs and HIV. If exposed to an STI/HIV, this may increase the risk of infection. Nonoxynol-9 is not recommended as a STI/HIV prevention method. The amount of nonoxynol-9 spermicide on a pre-lubricated condom is not sufficient to prevent pregnancy. A full dose (two teaspoons full) is needed to be effective as a spermicide. Nonoxynol-9 pre-lubricated condoms need to be used in combination with a full dose of spermicide if birth control is a consideration. Nonoxynol-9 is recommended as a birth control method only in the proper amount indicated on the package. Please refer to the directions before using these products. Many people, especially women, have sensitivity to nonoxynol-9. This can cause a rash or small lacerations to the vaginal mucosa. These abrasions make it easier for HIV to enter the blood stream though the vaginal walls. In any case, according to Mayer Laboratories, it should not be used more than once in a 24-hour period. Also, if you experience any irritation due to nonoxynol-9, discontinue use immediately. If you have any additional question related to nonoxynol-9, please call 893-3434 to speak with Kirsi Aulin, Health Educator at Student Health.
