Quick Facts on Emergency Contraception

  • EC contains the hormone progestin prescribed under the brand name Plan B.
  • Plan B can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse, but is more effective the sooner it is taken, and can be 89% effective in preventing pregnancy.
  • Plan B is appropriate when:

    • Contraception was not used
    • Contraception not used correctly (check packet inserts)
    • Condom slipped or broke
    • Withdrawal or “pull out method” used
    • Forced sex
  • No serious complications have been associated with Plan B. Minor side effects include nausea and menstrual changes (next period can be earlier, later, or on time).
  • EC does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • EC is not recommended for routine use (it is less effective than regular contraception)
