Quick Facts on Emergency Contraception
- EC contains the hormone progestin prescribed under the brand name Plan B.
- Plan B can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse, but is more effective the sooner it is taken, and can be 89% effective in preventing pregnancy.
- Plan B is appropriate when:
- Contraception was not used
- Contraception not used correctly (check packet inserts)
- Condom slipped or broke
- Withdrawal or “pull out method” used
- Forced sex
- No serious complications have been associated with Plan B. Minor side effects include nausea and menstrual changes (next period can be earlier, later, or on time).
- EC does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- EC is not recommended for routine use (it is less effective than regular contraception)
