Welcome to SACNAS UCSB Chapter
We are the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native-Americans in Science chapter at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We recently won the most active chapter of the year at the 2008 National SACNAS Conference in Salt Lake City, and in the 2006 National Conference in Tampa, Florida, we were recognized by the SACNAS board of Directors as one of the three exemplary chapters with exceptional efforts in promoting student successs at UCSB. We take great pride in representing the National SACNAS Organization through our student chapter. Over the past four years we have created an awareness of resources and research opportunities for science, mathematics, and engineering students, we've provided professional development and leadership opportunities for our members. We have also coordinated outreach activities to potential science majors in the local high schools, helped our community of Isla Vista,CA look more beautiful, and increased membership of our chapter. The mission of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is to encourage Chicano/Latino and Native American students to pursue undergraduate and graduate education, and obtain the advanced degrees necessary for science research, leadership, and teaching careers at all levels. For over 30 years, SACNAS has provided strong national leadership in improving and expanding opportunities for minorities in the scientific workforce and academia, as well as mentoring college students within science, mathematics and engineering. The UCSB-SACNAS Student Chapter embraces these values and strives towards the same goals. With support from distinguished faculty such as Ofelia Aguirre, Professors Kenneth Millett and Hector Ceniceros of the Mathematics Department, and the staff of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), the UCSB-SACNAS club works towards creating and maintaining a support system and networks amongst STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors, faculty, and staff.
