I was born in Sinaloa Mexico. I got my bachelors degree in Physics from the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City and the Masters and PhD degrees in Mathematics from New York University. I was the first one in my immediate and extended family to go to graduate school.
I am a professor at the Department of Mathematics at UCSB and  have been working as a faculty advisor with the UCSB SACNAS club since its inception. Before coming to UCSB in 2000, I held faculty appointments at the National Polytechnic Institute,  UCLA, and Caltech. Recently, I was also  a visiting professor at the University of Sao Paulo Brazil.  My research focuses on the design, analysis, and application of numerical methods for the investigation of free boundary problems in multiphase and complex fluids.
