Highlights of Fall Quarter 2000 SBDC Activities
The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club has been very active this quarter. Here is a summary of some of our recent events, and some Fall Quarter activities photos as well.
- UCSB Residents Halls Move-in-Day Bake Sale
- The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club held its Fourth Annual "Move-in-Day" Bake Sale for the UCSB Residents Halls on Sunday September 24, 2000. The weather was perfect. The families of the new or returning students were hungry, and we had an opportunity to supply them with needed goodies. The SBDC is raising funds for sponsoring our Fall Quarter Lindy Hop Performance Team

- SBDC Week #3 Theme Dance: 1960's Night
- The Week #3 (October 9th) Theme Dance was a lot of fun! Everything was "groovy, man" and everyone was filled with "peace and love :-)". We awarded prizes to the best costumes. In addition to the mix of Swing and Ballroom music, we also played a number of 1960's Motown, R&B, and swinging Rock and Roll tunes! Tonight's dance started with a specialty Swing Dance instruction: The Madison, a Swing line dance from the early 1960's (you might remember it from the movie "Hairspray"). See you at the next one, the Week #6 Theme Dance, Monday October 30th, "Halloween Night!"
SBDC Week #6 Theme Dance: HALLOWEEN NIGHT!
The Week #6 (October 30th) "HALLOWEEN NIGHT" Theme Dance was a huge success and a lot of fun. This night-before-Halloween dance gave everyone a chance to try out what they would be wearing on Halloween. We danced all night in a variety of costumes. We had clowns, nerds, Vulcans, big hair people. Even Spiderman was there! We had a fun costume contest, too. The evening started with a specialty Swing Line Dance instruction: The Charleston. The next SBDC Theme dance will be Week #9 (Monday, November 20th), "Sports Night!"!

SBDC Fall Harvest Dance!
The SBDC Fall Harvest Dance was a big hit last Saturday night (November 4th, 2000). We had plenty of music, dancing, and entertainment to go around. The entire Goleta Valley Community Center Ballroom was decorated from the Fall Harvest, with balloons, turkeys, pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks. We even had a life-sized scarecrow, made from balloons. Lisa Kay and her partner performed an exhibition of "Street Hustle" for us during the dance intermission. Near the end of the dance, we had our "Fall Leaf" Balloon Drop. The dancers got to pop all of the balloons to try to find the prizes that were hidden inside them. Well done. Thanks to everyone who participated in our Fall Harvest Dance!

Lindy Hop Workshops with Chester Whitmore and Katherine Ljunggren

The SBDC Lindy Hop workshops last Sunday (11/12/00) were a blast! We had both Katherine Ljunggren from Stockholm, Sweden, and Chester Whitmore from Los Angeles teaching us Lindy Hop and Charleston all afternoon. Each of these teachers is dynamic and full of energy. When they work together, anything can happen! The classes were fun, and they made us work hard. In the Lindy Hop classes, Katherine and Chester emphasized the style, timing, and technique of the Savoy Style (original) Lindy Hop. For Charleston, Katherine taught a sequence of the 1920's Charleston steps that fit the music (like a "Charleston choreography"). We will be able to practice what we learned in upcoming SBDC Club Practice Meetings. Thanks to everyone who participated in our Fall Quarter Lindy Hop Workshops!
SBDC Dance Etiquette "Tip of the Week"
As a continuing feature, the Swing and Ballroom Dance Club publishes a weekly Dance Etiquette "Tip of the Week". Each week, we announce the etiquette tip, and then it is posted on the SBDC Web Site.
SBDC Weekly Basics I Lesson Schedule
As another continuing feature for the Fall Quarter, the SBDC Weekly Basics I Lesson Schedule is posted on the SBDC Web Site. This schedule includes the topics for the weekly Monday Night Club Meeting 30 minute Ballroom lesson and the 30 minute Swing lesson. Generally, each topic is covered for two consecutive weeks. SBDC club members are able to find the dance topics of interest from the schedule, and plan in advance to attend those lessons. All lessons are supervised or conducted by the SBDC club officers.
