Summary of Fall Quarter 1999 SBDC Activities
Listed below is a summary of the Swing and Ballroom Dance Club activities for the Fall Quarter 1999.
- UCSB Residents Halls Move-in-Day Bake Sale
- The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club held a Bake Sale for the UCSB Residents Halls on Sunday September 26, 1999. We had an opportunity to supply needed goodies to the thousands of newly arriving students, and their families who traveled with them. The SBDC is raising funds for co-sponsoring an upcoming special dance performance event, to be held in January 2000.
Here are two of the SBDC officers hard at work at the bake sale!

- Weekly SBDC Club Practice Meetings
- The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club regular weekly club practice meetings are held on Monday nights, from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm , in Robertson Gym, room 2320. We have set aside time each week for our inaugural "Dance Instructors Open House", where we invite Santa Barbara area Swing and Ballroom Dance Instructors to come to our club meeting, and present their dance program to the SBDC members.
The meetings consist of our Basics I Swing and Ballroom introductory dance program (for the beginning dancers), our Basics II practice and styling program (for the intermediate or advanced dancers), announcements of upcoming activities, and demonstrations or exhibitions.
Fall Quarter Halloween Swing Dance!!
The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club held a very successful Halloween Swing Dance! It was on Saturday night (the day before Halloween), at the Goleta Valley Community Center, from 8:00 pm to 11:30 pm. The SBDC decorated the dance hall for Halloween, including spooks, skeletons, and an outdoor cemetery. Most of the attendees showed up in costumes. The SBDC DJ provided the Swingin' music for the evening. We held a Swing Dance contest, a Ballroom Dance contest, and a "Costume Cake-Walk" contest throughout the evening. Also, the SBDC provided refreshments at the dance. The SBDC held a free introductory Swing Dance lesson prior to the dance.
Saturday Morning / Afternoon Lindy Hop and Ballroom Dance Workshop
The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club Fall Quarter Ballroom and Swing Workshop took place on Saturday, 20 November 1999, throughout the day. All of the classes were very well attended. David Alvarez taught the first class, a beginning level Waltz. Chester Whitmore taught a Lindy Hop beginning level class, followed by a continuing intermediate level class. The students loved both David and Chester, and want then back in the Winter Quarter. We'll work on that.
"Millennium 2000 Dance" (Swing and Ballroom)!!
The SBDC "Millennium 2000 Dance" was held last Saturday night (December 4th), and was a huge success! The theme was "Welcome 2000". The Martinez Brothers Band played a wide variety of music for Latin, Smooth Ballroom, and Swing Dancing all night long! The "End-of-the-Year" decorations were great, including a New York City Skyline across the stage. We had a special (sparkling cider) "Year-end Toast". Plus we ended the dance in style with an exciting balloon drop and prize giveaway. Thanks to all those who attended and made it such a fun event!
