Highlights of Winter Quarter 2001 SBDC Activities

The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club has been very active this quarter. Here is a summary of some of our recent Winter Quarter events and activities. (Photos will be added soon.)

SBDC Week #3 Theme Dance: SUPER HERO Night
The Week #3 (January 22nd) "Super Hero Night" Theme Dance was definitely a Super Night for dancing! We had some true recognizable Super Heroes present. Also, there were a number of "Up and Coming Super Heroes" there. These are the ones that haven't been written about yet in comic books. Mostly, hero-wannabees like "Cut-in Man", "Tattoo Lady", "Dancing Guy", and others. Prizes were awarded to the best Super Heros (real or "wannabees").

SBDC Week #6 Theme Dance: WILD WILD WEST
The Week #6 (February 12th) "WILD WILD WEST" Theme Dance was a lot of fun. We didn't have any Old-West-Style "shoot-outs", but we did have a lot of good guys and bad guys there. They seemed to get along quite well on the dance floor! Again, prizes were awarded for the "Best of the Wild, Wild, West".

SBDC Week #9 Theme Dance: PIRATE NIGHT
Aaaarrrgh!!! The Week #9 (March 5th) "PIRATE NIGHT" Theme Dance was a huge success. Unsuspecting sailors and dancers alike were fair game for the marauding band of crusty cut-throats! Actually, no blood was spilled, and no fair maidens were taken hostage this night. The sword play was limited to swing rhythms only. And people were made to "Walked the Plank" in Lindy Timing. The most realistic of the Pirates were awarded Blender's gift certificates.

SBDC Valentine's Dance!
The Swing and Ballroom Dance Club's 5th Annual Valentine's Dance last Saturday (2/10/2001) was a really great event! There were tons of balloon decorations, including a balloon arch over the patio door, and another bigger arch covering the entire stage. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the mix of Swing, Ballroom, and Latin music. People came to this event from as far away as Los Angeles, despite the rain and cold weather. The SBDC provided ample refreshments. The evening concluded with a giant "balloon pop" for the prize tickets that were hidden in the balloons! Thanks to everyone who helped set up and decorate the Goleta Valley Community Center.

SALSA Workshops with David Uejio
The SBDC Salsa Workshops last weekend (27 January 2001) went very well! David Uejio taught an intermediate Salsa class, which focused on timing, technique, and wrap steps. His advanced Salsa class concentrated on technique and styling, through a pattern of selected open and closed position steps. Thanks also to Erin and Keri who helped David teach the classes. We will continue to review the Salsa steps in our weekly Monday night SBDC Club Practice Meetings.

SBDC Dance Etiquette "Tip of the Week"
As a continuing feature, the Swing and Ballroom Dance Club publishes a weekly Dance Etiquette "Tip of the Week". Each week, we announce the etiquette tip, and then it is posted on the SBDC Web Site.

SBDC Weekly Basics I Lesson Schedule
As another continuing feature for the Winter Quarter, the SBDC Weekly Basics I Lesson Schedule is posted on the SBDC Web Site. This schedule includes the topics for the weekly Monday Night Club Meeting 30 minute Ballroom lesson and the 30 minute Swing lesson. Generally, each topic is covered for two consecutive weeks. SBDC club members are able to find the dance topics of interest from the schedule, and plan in advance to attend those lessons. All lessons are supervised or conducted by the SBDC club officers.
