SWING and BALLROOM DANCE CLUB Weekly Meetings (SPRING QUARTER 2009 Info)
1) Regular SBDC dance/practice meetings are held on MONDAY nights, 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm +, in UCSB Robertson Gym Room 2320 (upstairs), beginning September 29th 2008.
2) Membership in the SBDC is open to anyone (UCSB student, staff, faculty, or SB community member) who has an interest in social dancing (Swing, Ballroom, Latin, and Salsa).
3) We welcome dancers of ALL abilities, and have a Basics I program to help the beginner dancers get started. NO prior experience is needed. NO dance partners are needed.
4) Your first time visit to the SBDC is FREE as our guest. Then, if you decide to join the club, there is a $20 New Members membership fee for the school quarter.
5) You can visit the SBDC Web Site at http://orgs.sa.ucsb.edu/sbdc for more information about the SBDC and dancing opportunities in Santa Barbara.
6) UCSB Parking: UCSB Parking still $3 for weekend or night time events. The closest parking lot to Robertson Gym is now in the “Mesa Parking Garage” (East of Rob Gym).
7) Locations: Regular SBDC Monday Night Meetings are held in Robertson Gym Room 2320 (upstairs).
Most Special SBDC Dances and Workshops will be held in NEW UCSB Student Resources Building (SRB) Multipurpose Room (room 1112). Easy Parking. (New 4-level parking garage next door , in Lot 22). NEW SBDC Membership Pricing Policy (Spring Quarter 2009). Beginning in January 2009, SBDC RENEWAL Membership fees are reduced as follows: $10 for students per quarter; $15 for non-students per quarter. The $20 NEW SBDC Membership fees still apply. ALSO, there will now be a one-time-only per quarter “Drop In Fee” of $5, for anyone who has already visited the SBDC at least one time, and wishes to attend another SBDC event without having to join as a new member for $20 (or re-join as a renewing member for $10/$15). This will be especially beneficial for people who are visiting the UCSB area for a short period of time. Note: these fees will be subject to change.

Week #10, Monday June 1st, is UCSB “Dead Week”. The SBDC will be meeting for “PIZZA and VIDEO NIGHT” at the STUDENT RESOURCES BUILDING Multi-purpose room (NOT Robertson Gym room 2320). We will have an EARLY STARTING TIME: 8:00 pm.
Week #11, Monday June 8th, will be the LAST meeting for Winter Quarter 2009, Robertson Gym room 2320. We will have an EARLY STARTING TIME: 8:00 pm. Plus, Beach Party Theme Night!
** SBDC SPRING QUARTER 2009, SPECIAL SBDC “PIZZA and VIDEO Night”: . Monday night, Week #10, June 1st, EARLY START, 8:00 pm to 10:30 pm, UCSB STUDENT RESOURCES BUILDING (NOT Robertson Gym!) . We will be showing videos and historical film clips from movies, documentaries, soundies, cartoons, dance workshops, competitions, and SBDC activities. Also, we will have FREE pizza for SBDC members! Immediately following the Video Night, we will have music for open dancing.
** NEW -- SBDC SUMMER 2009: MONDAY NIGHTS Open Dancing, Beginning MONDAY JUNE 29th. The SBDC will have MONDAY NIGHTS OPEN DANCING! Totally FREE! At UCSB Robertson Gym Room 2320 (upstairs). There is NO Membership Fee for any SBDC Summer activities. Just come and dance! Bring your friends. Schedule: June 29th through the end of August, Rob Gym Room 2320, 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
** NEW -- UCSB Summer Session 2009 Class: Jitterbug Swing. MONDAY nights beginning June 29th for 4-weeks. UCSB Robertson Gym room 2320 (upstairs), 6:30 pm to 7:45 pm. This beginning-level class will work on steps, techniques, and styling of different Swing Dances, including Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, and East Coast Style Swing. If time permits, we will introduce Swing Dance Line Dances. Taught by Steve Carlan and Anna Hernandez of the Swing and Ballroom Dance Club at UCSB. Cost: about $25/summer session, register at the UCSB Recreation Department Cashier’s Office. No Partners Needed.
** Sad News about Frankie Manning. Frankie Manning, the Legendary Master and Ambassador of the Lindy Hop, passed away peacefully in the morning on Monday April 27th, of complications from pneumonia. He was one month away from his 95th birthday, which was going to be celebrated in New York City by thousands of dedicated Lindy Hop fans. Frankie was an inspiration to everyone who met him, and his enthusiasm and smile were as infectious as the energy of the music and the Lindy Hop. (2) Friday 6/5/2009. First Friday Swing Dance in SB. With: the Jumpin Joz Band.
Time: 8:30 pm to 12:00 midnight; Location: Carrillo Recreation Center Ballroom, 100 E. Carrillo St, SB.
The band will be the Jumpin Joz Band. Cost: $12. (Students: $10). Sponsored by Jonathan and Sylvia Swing Dancing. A swing dance lesson will be given from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm, just prior to the dance. (3) Saturday 6/6/2009. Saturday Night Dance. Theme: Country/Western.
Time: 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm; Location: Carrillo Recreation Center Ballroom, 100 E. Carrillo St, SB.
The dance goes from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm, with a lesson from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Recorded/DJ Music. Each Saturday of the month has a different “theme” (Country, Tango, Ballroom, West Coast Swing, etc.). Cost: $15 (Students $12). Sponsored by Jonathan Bixby. Very large dance floor. All ages welcome! (4) Sunday 6/7/2009. First Sunday/Month Afternoon Tea Dance.
