Shoreline Preservation Fund Opens the Door for Major Funding
Santa Barbara, CA December 1, 1999 The Shoreline Preservation Fund (SPF) is now accepting applications for major funding proposals. Following a startup academic quarter when only proposals for minor funding (those under $500) were reviewed, the board is now ready to consider larger projects. Laura Brands, the chair of the seven member SPF board, comments: "We would like to see applications from students and community members that will protect the ecological integrity and the open space values of our coastline in perpetuity." She continues: "The board is excited that finally, UCSB students have the opportunity to preserve and maintain the UCSB coastline. The board looks forward to providing these opportunities through student funds."
The goal of the Shoreline Preservation Fund is to preserve, protect, and enhance the terrestrial and marine habitats associated with the shoreline of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The SPF will provide funds for projects that seek to preserve, enhance, or restore these areas or to educate the community at UCSB about the ecological value of this coastal ecosystem. The SPF will also provide funds to create safe and open access to the UCSB shoreline and to help keep these areas clean. Projects will be considered on the basis of merit, importance to the goals of the SPF, and the qualifications of the applicants to carry out the proposed project.
Applications for funding and general information can be obtained by contacting (805) 893-5166 or spf@as.ucsb.edu by e-mail. Applications are due on January 14, 2000 for Spring Quarter Funding.
The Shoreline Preservation Fund was formed as a result of a ballot measure passed in the 1999 UCSB elections, which locked-in $3.00 of Undergraduate and Graduate fees for the preservation and maintenance of the UCSB shoreline.
