Academic Departments (Acad), in addition to hosting degree programs, academic departments provide support for a student's academic progress and personal and professional development. Academic departments may also be important sources of funding. In addition to supporting their disciplines, academic departments provide courses that contribute to overall academic success, professional development, and academic growth. Key department personnel include: advisors, graduate advisors, graduate program assistants, department chairs, grant development staff, faculty and staff mentors, and student  peer advisors, and departmental graduate peers.

http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/depts.shtml

Advisors (Advisors) assist graduate students with the completion of degree requirements. Oftentimes, this is the chair or other member of a master's or doctoral committee. The quality of the relationship between advisor and student is a crucial factor in the student's success In addition to departmental advisors, C&CS, Graddiv, Ombuds, departmental Grad Peers, student Peer Advisors, Mentors, and other individuals may support some roles. For more information see the Advice and Assistance section of the Graduate Division website.

http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/advice/

Advisor Selection (Adv_Select) is crucial to academic success, as good advisors make an otherwise unattainable degree possible, and advisor conflicts can be significant barriers to academic success. You may end up retaining your sponsoring faculty member, or you may find a more suitable advisor for your focus. This is a crucial commitment, and you should consider communication style, support approach, funding, overlapping interests, specializations, and other factors. Talk with your peers and faculty to assure a good match. The relationship must be maintained with good communication, planning, time management, and motivation.

http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/academic/advice/
