Session VI: Sunday 1:15-2:15 pm
ACADEMIC: "Claiming Our Past: the
Challenge of Writing Queer Biography"
What is the role of biography—writing (and
revealing) the lives of queer folk—in establishing a queer community?
Creating a history of queer lives through the genre of biography is a
significant element in defining a queer continuum and shaping our own
identities. But what are the responsibilities and dilemmas faced by the
queer biographer? This panel discussion will generate dialogue about
queer biography and questions of methodology, ethics, identity, and
sexual politics.
Presenter: Nancy Ann Arnold is a PhD candidate in History of Art and
Architecture and a Doctoral Emphasis Student in the Women’s Studies
Program at UCSB. Currently, she is doing research for her dissertation
concerning two lesbian art collectors titled Gathering Women: the
Patronage and Partnership of Margaret Mallory and Ala Story.
