Coach Gumby will discuss the results of his latest research regarding
openly gay athletes and he will discuss the mechanisms of homophobia
that gay athletes must deal with. He will look at gay athletes in a
historical perspective and suggest where the status of gay athletes
might be going.
Presenter: Coach Eric "Gumby" Anderson came out of the
closet as the nation's first openly gay high school coach in 1993, and
has been lecturing and writing about gay athletes since. He has a
Bachelor's in Health Science, a Masters in Sport Psychology, a Masters
in Sociology, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Sociology at the
University of California Irvine, where he also teaches the sociology of
sport, men and masculinities, and small group dynamics. Coach Gumby has
coached for 16 years and has authored three books.
