Session VI: Sunday, 1:15-2:15 pm

INTERSECTIONS: "Imperial Leather: Race, Gender, and SM"

What does it mean for a person of color to pose as a ‘slave’? What does it mean to reappropriate loaded issues of race and gender in sexual power play? Considering the ideas of popular media, Catherine MacKinnon, and pro-sex feminism, this roundtable discussion offers insights into the transgressive sexual politics of power. The central question to this discussion is: How should pervy feminists and anti-racist leatherfolk circumvent accusations that the SM lifestyle is misogynist and racist while also challenging sexism and white supremacy in the scene?

Presenter: Juno Parreñas has maintained her monthly column for the nationally distributed Lesbian News since the age of seventeen. She has written extensively on issues of race, youth, and SM. She has reported on/participated in European and American SM scenes. At UCSC, she is the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Intern for Queer Programs.
