Session IV: Sunday 9:30-11:00 am
IDENTITIES: "The Place of Intersex in the
Queer Community"
People who are intersexed are born with bodies
that cannot be easily categorized into a binary system of male or female
and are often "cured" by modern medicine with non-consensual
surgeries and hormone treatments. In this panel discussion three
intersex activists will discuss their lives, struggles, and connections
with the queer community. In addition, Del LaGrace Volcano will screen
his recent documentary film, Journey Intersex, which explores his
discovery of his own intersexuality and that of his cousin Heidi’s.
Together, Del and Heidi go on a sometimes painful journey of
truth-seeking, and ultimately the cousins find that they themselves hold
more of the answers than science or their families can yet offer.
Presenters: Sherri Groveman is an attorney and intersex
activist. In 1995, she founded the U.S. branch of the Androgen
Insensitivity Syndrome Support Group (AISSG) and presently serves as a
director of both AISSG as well as the Intersex Society of North America
(ISNA). Hida Viloria is an intersex activist, public speaker, and
writer. She is a member of ISNA and for various reasons was never
subjected to surgical or hormonal treatment. Del LaGrace Volcano is
a gender variant visual artist (formerly known as lesbian photographer
Della Grace) living in London since 1982.
