ACADEMIC: "The Lack of Queer Youth
Education"
This workshop will provide a wide range of
academic information on the issues that queer students encounter in
traditional school settings. This includes how professors, teachers, and
staff (both queer and straight) educate, interact with, ostracize and
protect our queer students. The workshop is designed to assist educators
and community members enhance the academic achievement of our queer
youth. Topics of gender discrimination, alternative schools, and the
lack of open queer educators will be addressed.
Presenter: Laura Icedo is an open lesbian Chicana high school
teacher working for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She is
finishing her MA at Cal State LA in education with research on the
drop-out rate of queer youth.
