Session II: Saturday 2:15-3:15 pm
OURSELVES: "Male Body Image in the Queer
Community"
This workshop will be a discussion and exploration
of body image as it relates to males in the queer community. Explore how
gay males were/are perceived by society, and in gay male culture at
various points, both pre- and post-Stonewall. Masculine and feminine
stereotypes, gym culture, disco, drag, steroids, AIDS, and
heroin/crystal-user chic will be discussed. We will also look at how
this has shaped the perception of our "selves," self-esteem,
destructive behavior, dating/relationships and sexual addiction.
Presenter: Rafael Cosio is a graduate of UCSB and
has been actively working in the HIV/AIDS and LGBT communities
professionally for 7 years. He has spoken at various state conferences
and at local schools and universities, and he has conducted various
Speakers Bureau trainings, in-services, and sensitivity trainings for
high school teachers, churches, and staff members of various local
