ACADEMIC: "Social Geographies and the Queer Community"—Panel
of Presentations
Two graduate students will present their academic papers for
discussion.
"Gay and Straight Relationships within a ‘Gay Neighborhood’
Setting" examines past and present day relations in Hillcrest, San
Diego’s ‘gay neighborhood.’ Using archival, interview, and
participant observation data, Deborah Lou will explore: 1) the
socio-historical development of Hillcrest into the city’s ‘gay
community,’ and 2) the present-day relationships between gay/lesbian
and heterosexual people who live, work, and participate in the
community.
"Who’s in Bed with Lon Mabon? An Examination of Who Funds the
OCA" examines how the Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA) which has led
Oregon’s anti-gay movement is able to generate both financial support
for anti-gay legislation and ideological legitimacy. An historical
examination mapping the rise of the Religious Right from the 1960s to
present reveals how and why anti-gay campaigns have increasingly
captured center stage in broader right-wing platforms.
Presenters: Deborah Lou is a Ph.D. Candidate in sociology at
UC Santa Barbara. She is currently conducting the fieldwork for her
dissertation, which examines community relations between gay/lesbian and
straight people in Hillcrest, San Diego's "gay neighborhood."
Jey Strangfield is an active opponent of the capitalist system currently
moonlighting as a sociology graduate student at the University of
Oregon. Jey teaches sometimes- reluctant students to ruthlessly
criticize all that exists and publicly articulates the needs of the
diverse members of the poor and working class as loudly as possible.
