Session VI: Sunday, 1:15-2:15 pm
ACTIVISM & POLITICS: "Radical
Queers"
In our workshop we will discuss queers’ roles in
the revolutionary movement for social and national liberation. What are
the ties between queer and revolutionary politics? How can queers show
global solidarity with other oppressed peoples and fight for social
equality for all humans? How does capitalism affect queers and what are
some alternative political and economic systems? How does the word
"globalization" frame people’s perceptions of the global
economy? We will critique the anti-globalization movement from an
anti-Imperialist (queer) perspective.
Presenters: Sarah Miller Barnes is a senior studying sociology
at UCSB. She is an active member of RAIL (Revolutionary Anti-Imperialist
League). Daniel Magpali recently graduated from UCSB with a BA in Asian
American studies. He is currently involved with ASIAN! (AsianS for Ideas
in Action Now!) as well as Red Phoenix which is an Asian socialist
organization in Los Angeles.
