This program will present current information regarding the
prevalence and incidence of illegal substance (drug) use in the lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, outlining specific
types of drugs and explaining their chemical composition, effects and
the correlation between substance use and less safe sex practices. The
presenters will explore the relationships between queer youth
(generations x and y) and the tribal, cult, club and spiritual aspects
of their substance abuse. Finally, the harm reduction and popular
education models will be overviewed as methods of intervention.
Presenters: Rafael Cosio is a graduate of UCSB and has been
actively working in the HIV/AIDS and LGBT communities professionally for
7 years. He has spoken at various state conferences and at local schools
and universities, and he has conducted various Speakers Bureau
trainings, in-services, and sensitivity trainings. Maurice L. Hudson is
the director of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Services and the
Queer Resource Center at UCSB. He received his Master of Social Welfare
from Berkeley and has worked as a clinical social worker with children,
adolescents and adults, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight
persons, persons living with HIV/AIDS, as well as homeless and severely
and persistently mentally-challenged persons.
